Woof Woof
Ever feel tired, stressed, and overwhelmed throughout a long and tedious day of school or work? It doesn't help it any more when you feel this type of way and you go home to an empty house. There are so many more benefits associated with owning a pet dog than just having a furry companion that eats, sleeps, and poop. These friendly companions provide us with many important life lessons as they grow and develop alongside their owner. According to an article published by Accredited Online Schools, "Should Students Have Pets?, by Shelley Zansler, states that people who have spent time with domestic animals have likely experienced some of the immediate benefits pets can bring, however, there can also be drawbacks to keeping pets, especially for college students. She gives readers insights that these furry companions provide students with a mental health boost, dogs encourage exercise, they assist in making friends, and they provide constant companionship throughout any given time period.
According to a 2017 report by the American College Health Association, college students report high rates of stress, loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Studies have further shown that pets can increase people's levels of oxytocin, a hormone that reduces anxiety, and lowers blood pressure, by 300 percent.
Additionally, owning a pet dog teaches responsibilities and allows the owner to understand what true unconditional love actually is.
In my opinion, I feel as though most of the time the responsibilities and care taking aspect of owning a dog greatly gets overlooked because of all the fun and cheerful moments that the dog will bring in the future. Dogs provide unconditional love to their owners in the sense that they will always remain by your side until the end of their lifetime, these little furry companions rely on you for their care and nurturing and they in return will also provide you with unconditional love, happiness, and memories that will last a lifetime depending on how you care for him/her!
One thing that I wanted to emphasize before pursuing ownership of a dog is to research and understand the tremendous amount of time commitment that is required in order to take care of these little guys. While pets are a huge responsibility, they are also a huge expense, the costs of routine expenses, food, litter, grooming supplies, and health care costs would be a detrimental blow to those who underestimate the costs of having a pet. Additionally, students have to also account for their own stressful schedules; school may not be an easy task to some and adding ownership of a dog to some may mean also adding onto the list of more responsibilities in the student life of studying and preparing for exam weeks. Without taking notice and account of these things prior to ownership as a student, it possibly leads to health detriments to the dog due to improper exercise and staying locked up all day.

Hey Andy! Wow. Great blog with a lot of insight! I agree they're a lot of responsibility
ReplyDeleteand shouldn't be taken lightly.
Yes, I agree with you that before having a dog, you should really do a lot of researches on the breed to see what they need and if you have enough time and energy to fulfill their needs in the daily life. But as a dog person and a dog owner, I have to agree that even how stressful it is from school or daily life, when you come home to your furry friend, all that stress will be gone.
ReplyDeleteI understand that t is important having a pet dog but due to past experiences I hate dogs and cats. Sorry to say it but really liked the length.
ReplyDeleteSuper cute blog! As a dog owner myself, this was very informative and I agree with all the points being made. Taking care of a pet is a lot of work on it's own but definitely worth the time and effort.
ReplyDeleteThis was a nice read. I often hear that some colleges have dogs around campus and it looks really fun and relaxing.
ReplyDeleteHi! Very cute corgi photo! I was thinking about getting a dog and have been putting it off due to my hectic schedule and not having the time commitment to take care of one. I agree that taking the responsibility to own a dog can be time consuming, but I am leaning towards getting one soon. You bring up very important information and advice about owning a dog.
ReplyDeleteWe used to have 2 dogs when I was growing up. One of them passed away when I was in elementary school and the other one passed away from cancer about 5 years ago. We have three cats now and they're not too bad. I still prefer dogs though.
ReplyDeleteI liked the way that your blog is set up and the dog pictures are so cute! I also agree with what you stated about how dogs come with alot responsiblity but they always have unconditional love which is so true!
ReplyDeleteHi there, I don't have dog but I have a cat, I know that kind of feeling when you come home and you know that someone is waiting for you, that is just so lovely.
ReplyDeleteWe've always had a cat in the house growing up, and right now, we have a cat AND a dog. It's true that having pets can really help you out and lift your mood. If you've had a long day, it's nice to be greeted by them when you come home. It can be a lot of work to own a pet, especially a dog, but it's more than worth it.
ReplyDeleteThis is an important post because stress is something that everyone encounters and having a little cuddle baby can make that all go away, so fast and relax you.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great post! I just got a puppy this year but the planning and decision making was years in the making. I definitely didn't want to bring a dog home without being fully prepared for what comes with having a dog. My dog is now seven months old and is the best companion for my autistic son as well as myself. I have seen what a positive influence she is in our lives already.
